Meet Your Tutor - Evey Weavey / Yvonne Hammond

Having woven with NZ flax/harakeke for more than 30 years, Evey has acquired an in-depth knowledge of the tikanga, the passing of knowledge and of Māori protocols to learners.

Evey is passionate about working alongside students either new to the medium or to those already with harakeke experience wishing to extend their skills, ideas and creativity in a fun and supportive environment.

She loves surface and texture. It allows her thoughts and feelings to surface, showcasing unspoken but intuitive concepts. On her journey with flax art a mutual identity has evolved; sometimes very structured and controlled, at other times releasing the wild and freeness of the material.

In the process she has liberated herself and the medium. The flax speaks of interwoven emotions and the playful way Evey explores texture evokes curiosity.

"It has been my personal journey to grow through raranga/flax weaving and the care of the harakeke plants. I go forward learning and sharing my art."
